(
I `HANNON&WILSON,INC.
1
like soils, the small confines of the trench, and the limited time-frame for aeration.
Therefore, the use of imported structural fill should be andcipated.
I 8.4.6 Wet Weather Farthwork
I
i As shated before, the on-site soils are moisture sensitive. Thesc soils ace easily
disturbed by construction equipment and may degnde W a slurry-like consistenry when
subjected to construction trac or otherwise disturbed in wet condi6ons. Thetefore, we
I
; recommend that earthwvrk be scheduled during the drier and wermer months of the yeaz
when it is cheaper and more effective. If earthwork has w taioe placc in wet wrzther or wet
( condi6ons, the recommendations detailed below should be followed.
I 1) Fill material should contain not more than 5 pencent fines, by weight, based
upon wet sieving the soil fration passing the 3/4-inch sieve. Fines should be
non-plastic. The outwash may be suitable for this use. If enough outwash is
Inot available, such soils would have to imported co the site.
2) As an altemadve, stabili7ation of on-site soils with cement or lime wvuld be
I required to achieve proper wmpaction. Aeration may not be feasible during
wet weather.
I3) Construction tcaffic should be restricted to frquently used routes. The size or
type of equipment may have to be limited to prevent soil disturbance.
4) Farthwork should be accomplished in small sections and carried thmugh to
completion W minimize exposure to wet weather. No soil should be left
uncompacted so it can soak up watec Soils which become too wet for
compaction should be remwed and replaced with clean granular macerial.
5) The ground surface in the construction area should be sloped and sealed with
a smooth drum roller at the end of each day to pmmote the apid runoff of
precipitadon and w prevent ponding of wecer.
6) Gravel working surfaces arc recommended once the subgrade area for floor
slabs and pavements aze exposed. If foundations arie conswcted during
wetter times of the year, or if seepage is significant, a thin layer of lean-miz
concrete should be placed at the base of the footings to reduce the possibiliry
of disturbing the subgrade soils.
I7) In cut areas, it may be desirable to leave the subgrade on.. to tw feet abwe
the planned grade so that disturbed soils resulting from construcdon operdtions
I W-6693-01
i 7.2
