I SHANNGN tW:LSON.INC.
wPoBiaphy. Because of this, it is our opinion that founda6on subdrains should be
Iconstructed around the perimeter of the proposed buildings that will be in cut areas. Theyc
drains would not have W eatend along che fioo6ngs in fill or at gcade areas, although it
wvuld be prudent to do so. Drains will intercept groundwater, and reduce the possibility of
wecness below the structures. Drains that are brittle or that can crush under the weight of
construction equipment are not recommended. Collected watcr from drains should be
dghtlined to the storm drain system. Convenient cleanouts should be provided to incmase
the useful life of the drains.
I
Surface water should be directed away from the structums and should not be a1loHred to seep
Iinto the ground close to the structures. For this purposc, the ground surface should be
sloped away from the structums. Surface and dawnspout water should not be introduced
! into foodng subdrains. Surface weter should be captued in catch basins and along with
dawnspout water should be conveyed in a non-perforated tightline inW the local dreinage
Isystem. Surface water should also be directed away from the east slope, and if necessary,
ditches should be inshdlled along the top of the slope to collect any overland surface w.tccr.
IAdditionally, a ditch should be placed at the bottom of the proposed revegetated slopes.
During construction, it will be necessary to control groundwater seepage and surface water
Irunoff with a system of drainage ditches and swdles. Shallow tempordry ditches woutd be
iequired W drain the law-lying areas and to dry out the soils surrounding these areas.
Deeper cut-off tcenches, which penehate inW the glacial soils or below planned ezcavation
depths, may be required in some aeas to allow eaccavation to proceed in the dry. Grading
iof the site to promote drainage will be necessary at all flmes.
Except as otherwise designed or specifically covered in the contract, the conUactor should be
made responsible for the control of all ground and surface water encountered during
construcdon. In this regard, sloping, ditching, pumping from sumps, installing trench dcains,
Idcwatering, and other measures should be employed as necc•ssary to permit the proper
completion ofwrk.
I
I
I
W-6693-01
I 26
