Science <br /> —' Applications Intemational Cotporation (SAIC) conducted the assessment for Ecology which iocluded a <br /> magnetic geophysical survey in and around the site of We former smeltec. T6e geophysical survey included <br /> the proposed NoRheast View Pazk propeRy. Soil samples wero collected from ffie former smelter site at this <br /> — time; however, the sampling area did not include the proposa! NoRheast View Park. <br /> '!be magnetic geophysical survey indicated areas of aaomelous magnetic values significently different from <br /> � background readings in the area of U�e former smeltu which suggested the possible presence of slag deposits <br /> in t6is area. Analytica� results indicated the <br /> presence of atsenic, cadmium,and lead in all twenty samples. Arsenic was detectal et concentrations grcater <br /> than the MTCA MUhod A residendal soil cleanup level of 20 ppm in eleven of the hveaty samples with the <br /> — greatest concenhation at 4,670 ppm. Cadmium was detected at concentrations greater then the MTCA Method <br /> A cleanup leve1 of 2 ppm in sevea of ffie twenry samples with t6e greatest concentration at l7 ppm. Lead vas <br /> detected at concentrations greater than the MTCA Method A cleaaup level of 250 ppm in five of the hventy <br /> — samples witlt the gcratest conexntrndon at 864 ppm (SAIC, June "3, 1991). <br /> Ecology conducted a pro-temedial investigation in May, 1991 of the area in and around the former smelter <br /> site. T6e iavesdgatiou included the collecdon of 85 surfece and near surfa�x soil samples. 'IWo samples wero <br /> � collected from the proposed Nottheast View Park. Arsenic was detected in all 85 samples at concencrations <br /> • ranging from 1.7 ppm to 53,100 ppm. The majority �f-amples containad arseoic at wncentretions greater <br /> than the MTCA Method A cleanup levd for rcsidential soil. Lead concentcations ranged from undetecte� to <br /> ' ' 8,870 ppm and cadmium concenhations canged from undetected to 81.2 ppm. The locations of ffie lwo <br /> samples collected from the proposed Northeast View Park are shown in Figure 2. Sample S-52, wllected <br /> from the north pamel contained aisenic and lead at concentcations of 9.6 aod 131 ppm, respeclively. Sample <br /> — S-53,wllected from the south parcel, wntained azsenic,cadmium and lead at concentrations of 145,0.79 and <br /> 306 ppm, respectively (SAIC, July, 1991). <br /> _ In August, 1991, t6e Everett Smelter Site was give a "number one" (out of five) ranking on Ecology's <br /> Hazardous Sites List. The lirt tanks sites in Washington on a scale from one to five. The Evenett Smelter <br /> Site was given a number one caniting becausc the former smelter site was developad and, since the 1930's, <br /> hes been occupied by ersideoas, public acras, and a highway inteccuange. In April, 1992, Ecology issued <br /> an eafoncement order to ASARCO, tne., to conduct interim cleanup actions and to perform a remedial <br /> -� investigation aod feasibility study to determine the final cleanup action plan. Interim Cleanup Actions were <br /> scheduled to be conducted betwcen May, 1992 and January, 1993 with the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility <br /> Study scheauled to be conducted between July, 1992 and OcNber, 1993. <br /> 3.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY AND OCCURRENCE OF GROUND-WATER <br /> � Regional geology in the Site area is based on Ground-Water Resources of Snohomish Couoty, <br /> Washington, Qeol�gical Water Supply Paper No. 1135 (R. C. Newcomb, 1952). In general, the regionel <br /> subsurfece geology of the Everdt area is chacacterized by drift material resulting from the Vashon Period of <br /> - glaciation, underlain by saud and silt formetions of the Fsperence Sand a-d the Admiralty Clay units. <br /> 3 <br />
