WASHINGTON
"2oI
RE: FIRE PREVENTION INSPECTION F"'E DEPARTMENT
A fire prevention inspection was conducted in your building on August 13,
1983. A letter listing violations of the Uniform Fire Code was mailed to you
on August 17, 1983.
Subsequent reinsnectioas by the area fire company were made on September 12,
1983 and October 10, 1983. None of the violations had been corrected at that
time.
Further inspections by the Fire Marshal's office and the building official
resulted in the several discussions of the best solution to the problem of the
storage of rubber tires in the basement.
Present use constitutes violations of:
1. Uniform Building Code, 1979 edition, Section 3302, which requires that
two exits be provided from occupied basements. Sec. 3302(l) 2.
2. Uniiorm Building Code, 1979 edition, Section 3802 (b), whie'a requires
that basements larger than 1500 square feet and not provided with
adequate access openings, shall have an automatic sprinkler system
installed.
3. Uniform Building Code, 1979 edition, Section 1706 (a), which requires
that shafts serving more than one adjacent floor be enclosed by a minimum
one hour fire-:.esistive construction.
The practice of storing combustibles in the basement is not only a technical
violation of Code, but represents some very real hazards to life and property
in the event of fire. Therefore:
1. Either remove all combustible storage from the basement,
OR 2. bring the basmeent into compliance with Code requirements for such
use.
