7699c
November 18, 1987
D W STEPHENSON
LES SCHWAB TIRES SALES h SERVICE
2701 WALNUT STREET
EVERETT WA 98201
RE: EXTENSION OF STORAGE SPACE
Dear Mr. Stephenson:
We are in receipt of your letter of November 4, 1987, in which you request an
additional year's extension for use of basement storage space at 2716
McDougall.
As mentioned in our telephone conversation of October 28, I have discussed
this problem with our fire suppression division.
They have concluded, unanimously, that this extension should not be granted.
The following facts were considered:
1. Present use constitutes a violation of:
a. Section 3303 (a), Uniform Building Code 1985, which requires
basements to have two exits.
b. Section 3802 (b), Uniform Building Code 1985, which requires
basements which exceed 1500 square feet, and which lack proper
firefighting access openings, shall have an automatic sprinkler
system installed.
C. Section 1706 (a), Uniform Building Code 1985, which requires
that openings (shafts, stairways) serving more than two floors
be separated by fire resistive construction.
2. Present storage of rubber tires constitutes a very high fire load.
If a fire were to start in the basement, or if the basement storage
were exposed to fire from above, the result would be a fire which
would be near impossible to control. This would present an
unnecessarily high hazard to both life and property.
3. The extension, which was granted in 1984, has already gone a year
beyond its original intent, giving more than ample time for other
space to be obtained.
