Elevator hoistways
shall not be vented through an elevator machine room. Cable slots
entering the machine room shall be sleeved beneath the machine room
floor and extend to not less than 12" below the shaPt vent to
inhibit the passage of smoke into the machine room.
DISCUSSION:
The sleeve system prescribed by the Code for high-rise buildings
does not, in fact, inhibit smoke from entering the machine room.
The elevator industry has designed a gasket system consisting of
the installation of 1" high-density Pelt sandwiched between two
pieces of 16 gauge galvanized shaet steel, slotted to allow passage
of the hoist cables only. This assembly overlaps the Ploor
penetration on all sides a minimun of 2 inches.
POLICY: : It shall be the policy of the City of Everett that the
assb y described above is the equivalent to that prescribed by
the Code and will be allowed by the Building Official without
Purther appeal.
Issued by:
?im Tyler
Building Official
3226H
