There appears to be a defect in the floor joists. Whatever the defect, it cannot be determir,ad without removmg che flooring of the upper nnit or the ceiling of the unit below. Since the house was built in 1901 as a single family residence, the joists may be set at 24 inches on center. There m�y have been or still may be some water problems in the upper unit which could be causinb the rotting and deterioration of the joists. It could be any number of reasons for the defect in the joists but, there is a problem which needs to be corrected• It is recommen�rd that you obtain a state licensed contractor to look at the problem and correct any defeccs which may be present or, obtain a structural engineer to review and determine the suength and stability of the�oists for the purpose for which they are being used. One other deficiency noted during the inspecdon was an extension cord running from the lower unit to the exterior of the bmlding, across the driveway and into the garage• The extension cord will have to be removed.
