ATTACHMENT
FIELD EXPLORATIONS
Suhsurface conditions at the site were explorecl hy driiling thrcc horings in thc earth dam
embankment and excavating five te.et pic in the vicinity of tlie detention pond ezpansion. The
borings were drilled to depths ranging Gom 15 to 31.5 fcet on August 24, 1992 using a truck-
mounted, continuous-flight, hollow-stem auger drill. The test pits wcre excavated to depths
ranging from 10 to 14 feet on August 25, 1992 using a rubber-tired, tractor-mounted backhoe.
The eaplorations were locatal by pacing from existing features.
An engineering galogist with our firm continuously monitored lhe explorations and
maintained a detaileci log o(the soil and ground water conditions encountered. Soils encounterc
were claesified in general accordance with the classification system de.acribed in igure A-I. A
key to the symhols used on the boring logs is presented in Pigure A-2. Logs of the ezplorations
are included ac Figures A-3 through A-S. Elevations shown on the logs are hased on Boeing
darum.
7he exploraion logs are basul un our interpretation ofhe field and lahoratory data and
indicate the various types of soils encounterul. They also indicate the depths at which these soils
or their characteristics change, although the change might actually he gradual. If the change
occurreci between samples in the horings, it was imerpretul.
Relatively undisturhed samples werc ohtainecl from the borings using a Dames & Moore
2.4-inch inside diameter split-harrcl sampler. The sampler wa driven 18 inches using a 300-
pound weight falling a vertical disiance of approximaely 30 inches. Thc number of blows
requirul to drive the sampler the last 12 inches, or other indicatecl distance, is recordal on the
boring logc.
GEOTECHNICAL LABORATORY TESTING
All uf the oil s;unples uhtainecl frum the explorations wero se:dul and hrought to our
Inhoratory for funhcr examination. SeleleJ samples Kcre tested to determine moisnue content,
dry density anJ fines coment. The linex coment analyses kcre performul in accurdance with
ASTM D-I 140-54. Rcsults of'these tests arc presented in the hnring lugs.
t
G e n f n g i n e c r e ! - file Nn.0120-ISO.RIO
