If these rocks can be moved, the rockery should not be considend capable of
resaaining any signifcant lateia!load. However, it is both practical and even desirable that smaller rocks,
pazticularly those used for"chinldng" puposes, can be moved with a pry baz to achieve the "best fit".
2.01.4 Submittals: 'Ihe rock source shall pn:sent curtent geologic and test data for the minimum guidelines
. described in Secdon 2.01.1 on request by either ihe rockery contractor,the owner, or the applicable agency.
. ' 3.01 Rcekerv Construction:
;
3.01.1 General: Rockery constmcuon is a craft and deFcnds lazgely on the stdll and experience of the
' builder. A rockery is a protecdve system which helps to retard the weathering and erosion process acting
' on an exposed cut or fill soil face. While by its nature(we mass,size and shape of the rocks) it will piovide
some undetermined degtee of ietention, it is not a designed or engineered system in the scnse a reinfocced
 concrcte retaining wall would be considered designed or engineered. The degree ofetenion achieved is
dependant on the size of rock used; that is, the "mass" or wcight, and the height of the rockery being con-
saveted. 'Ihe larger the rock, the moe competent ihe rockery. To accomplish an appropriate degree of
I compecency, all rockeries in excess of four feet in height should be built on a "mass" basis, i.e. by the ton.
,  12p5/9
Page 3 _

•
-
