:J ` � IPMC PROVISIONS The scope of the IPMC is found in Section 101.2 which states, "The provisions of this code shall apply to all existing residential and nonresidential structures and all existing premises and consiitute minimum requirements and standards For premises, struuures, equipment and fatilities for light, ventilation, space, fieating, sanitation, protection from the elements, life safery, safety from fire and other haza-�s, and for safe and sanitary maintenante; [he responsibility of owners, operators and occupants' the oaupancy of exis[in� structures and premaes and for administration, enforcement and penalties." The intent of lhe IPMC is spedfied in Section 1013, which states "This code shall be construed to secure its expressed intent, which is ro ensure pubiic health, safety and welfare insofar as they are affected by the continued oaupanty and maintenance of structures and premises. Existirg structures and prenuses that do not comply with ihese provisions shall bc altered or repaired to provide a minimum level of health and safe[y as required herein." Habitable space is defined in Section 207. as "Space ii� a str;,ciure for living, sleeping, eat�ng or cooking. Hathrooms, toilet rooms, clozets, halls. storage or utility spaces, and similar areas are not considered habitable spaces. Minimum ceiling heights are found in Section 4043, which states "Habitable spaces, hallways, corridors, laundry areas, bathrooms, toilet roomz and habitable basement areas shall have a minimum dear ceiling height of 7(eet." There are three exceptions to this section, the one pertinent to [he attics is Exceptions 3"Rooms oaupied exdusively for sleeping, study or similar purposes and having a sloped [eilin� over all or part of the room. with a minimum dear cciling height of 7 feet over a minimum of one-third of the required minimum iloor area.
