:J ` � <br />IPMC PROVISIONS <br />The scope of the IPMC is found in Section 101.2 which states, "The provisions of this code shall apply to <br />all existing residential and nonresidential structures and all existing premises and consiitute minimum <br />requirements and standards For premises, struuures, equipment and fatilities for light, ventilation, <br />space, fieating, sanitation, protection from the elements, life safery, safety from fire and other haza-�s, <br />and for safe and sanitary maintenante; [he responsibility of owners, operators and occupants' the <br />oaupancy of exis[in� structures and premaes and for administration, enforcement and penalties." <br />The intent of lhe IPMC is spedfied in Section 1013, which states "This code shall be construed to secure <br />its expressed intent, which is ro ensure pubiic health, safety and welfare insofar as they are affected by <br />the continued oaupanty and maintenance of structures and premises. Existirg structures and prenuses <br />that do not comply with ihese provisions shall bc altered or repaired to provide a minimum level of <br />health and safe[y as required herein." <br />Habitable space is defined in Section 207. as "Space ii� a str;,ciure for living, sleeping, eat�ng or cooking. <br />Hathrooms, toilet rooms, clozets, halls. storage or utility spaces, and similar areas are not considered <br />habitable spaces. <br />Minimum ceiling heights are found in Section 4043, which states "Habitable spaces, hallways, corridors, <br />laundry areas, bathrooms, toilet roomz and habitable basement areas shall have a minimum dear ceiling <br />height of 7(eet." There are three exceptions to this section, the one pertinent to [he attics is Exceptions <br />3"Rooms oaupied exdusively for sleeping, study or similar purposes and having a sloped [eilin� over all <br />or part of the room. with a minimum dear cciling height of 7 feet over a minimum of one-third of the <br />required minimum iloor area. In cakulating the floor area o( such rooms, only tf�ose portions of the <br />iloc,r area with a minim dear ce�ling height of 5(ect shall be induded." <br />�/� <br />
