� STR�I:'CS AND IiELATED WORK <br /> 'he contractor shall have sufficient space available so that he can select from among a number of stockpiled <br /> rocks for each space in the rock wall to be filled. Rocks which have shapes which do not match the spaces <br /> offered by the previous course of rock should be placed elsewhere to obtain a better fit. Rocks shall be of a <br /> generally cubical, tubular or rectangul,v shape. Any rocks of basicaily rounded or tetrahedral form shall bc <br /> rejccted or used for filling large void spaces. <br /> The first coursc of rock shall be placed on firm unyielding soiL Thcre shall bc full contract behveen the <br /> rock and soil, which may rcquire shaping of the ground surface or slamming or dropping the rocks into placc <br /> so that the soii foundation conforms to the rock face bearing on it. The bottom of the first course of rock <br /> shall bc a minimum of hvclvc (12) inches below the lowest adjaccnt site gr:�dc. <br /> As the rock wall is conswcted, the rocks shall be placect so that there are nu continuous joint planes in <br /> either the vertical or later�l direction. �Vhenever possibic, cach rock shall bear on at least two rochs bclow <br /> it. Rocks should be placed so that there is some beming bchvecn tlat rock faces rather than on joints. Joints <br /> bctwcen courses (thc top surface or roch) shall slope back towards the cutface and away from thc rock wall. <br /> Because of the nature of Ihe product used to construct a roch wall, it is virtually impossible to avoid crcating <br /> void spaces between individual rochs. 1Vherc voids of greater than six inches in dimcnsion exist in thc facc <br /> of a rock wall, thcy shall be visually examined to determine if con[act behvicen the rochs exists within thc <br /> thickness of thc rock wall. If thcrc is no rock contact within thc rock wall thickncss, thc void shall oc <br /> chinkcd with a smalicr piccc of rock. <br /> A rock drainagc filtcr shall bc installed bchvicen the rcar face of thc rock wall and the soil facc bcing <br /> pro�ected. This drain rock I�ryer shall be at Ieast twclve (12) inches thick. For rock walls eight (S) feet in <br /> height or hi�hcr, it shall be at Icast cighlcen (lS) inches thick.
