TO BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
FROM REID H. SHOCKEY
DATE JANUARY 3, 1975
SUnsCT STAFF REVIEW --VARIANCE REQUEST: CITY OF EVERETT. EVERETT. WASHINGTON
KENNETH BRETHAUER, 3511 RUCKER
I. REQUEST:
Mr. Brethauer owns Everett Hobbycraft at 3511 Rucker. This
business is located in a R-4 zone and as such is a legal non-
conforming use. By Code, any replacement of his existing sign
would have to be non -illuminated, placed flat against the building
and not exceeding sixteen square feet in area. Mr. Brethauer
wishes instead to erect a lighted, 32 square foot pole sign.
II. ARGUMENTS 1N FAVOR:
A. The size of the sign is identical to the existing sign
to be replaced.
B. The new sign will be more visible to persons travelling
on Rucker.
b
C. The illumination will not adversely affect adja h
properties since Rucker Avenue is a major a al street
which is heavily lighted and predominantly non-residen-
tial in character.
III. ARGUMENTS AGAINST:
A. This is a substantial variation from signing on non-
conforming use requirements in the R-4 zone.
B. This will add to a proliferation of commercial signing y.
along this arterial. \ (.
IV. QUESTIONS:
A. How tall will the sign be?
B. Will it be turned off after closing?
C. Why, spe•,ifically, must it be 1) lighted, 2) 32 square
feet, 3) pole mounted?
D. How far will the sign project over the street?
