GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING STUDY
Inform, Inc
May 9, 2002
E-8493-5
Page 5
The presence of groundwater seepage should be expected in the excavation for the
proposed underground storage tanks. ECI should review the underground storage tank
design and assess the potential for uplift forces creatrd by groundwater conditions.
This report has been prepared for specific application to this project only and in a manner
consistent with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by other members of the
profession currently practicing under similar conditions in this area for the exclusive use
of Inform, Inc., and their representatives. No warrenty, expressed or implied, is made.
This report, in its entirety, should be included in the project contract documents for the
information of the contractor.
Site Preparation and General Earthwork
The site should be stripped and cleared of foundations, vegetation, and other deleterious
material. Existing utility pipes to be abandoned should be plugged or removed so they do
not provide a conduit for water and cause settlement problems. The existing asphalt
pavements in the planned construction area should also be stripped.
Outside of the construction areas, the existing pavement may be left in place to provide
an all weather construction surface. The existing pavement outside construction areas
may also be incorporated into the final pavement design, provided the pavement is in
good condition.
In areas where the pavement is stripped, it may be possible to crush the existing site
pavements for use as structural fill materials. Materials reclaimed by crushing and used
as fill should have a maximum size of four inches and should be mixed with a suitable
pranular soil to provide a well-graded material.
Following tlie stripping operation, the ground sur(ace where structural fill, foundations, or
slabs are to be placed should be observed by a representative of ECI. Proofrolling may be
necessary to identity soft or unstable areas. Proofrolling should be porformed under the
observation of a representative ot ECI. Soil in loose or soft areas, if recompacted and still
excessively yieldinp, should be overexcavated and replacad with structural fill to a depth
that will provide a stable base beneath the peneral strucwral fill. The optional use of a
ceotextilo fabric placed direcUy on the overexcavated surface may help to bridge unstable
areas. N nrcessary, ECI can provide recommendations (or geotextiles.
fmlh C.nsullnnl. Int
