i <br /> IC, Where a firm foundation is not encountered at the grade established, due to <br /> soft, spongy, or oTner unstable soil, such unstable soil under the pipe and for <br /> 1 a widih of at least one diometer on each side of the pipe shall be removed to <br /> the depth directed by ihe Engineer and replaced with gravel or other <br /> suitable selected mata+rial properly compacTed to provide adequate support <br /> for tlie pipe. <br /> I 3.02 BACKFILL <br /> � A. Backfilling shall be carefully done in such a manner as not to disturb or <br /> damage the installation. Not until pipe joints have set, piping has been <br /> tested, and ihe installation has been inspected and approved, shall trenches <br /> � be backfilled. Backfill shall start as soon after approval as possible to avoid <br /> I damage to finished work. If finished work is damaged prior to and during <br /> backfilling operations, such work shall be replaced or repaired an� retested <br /> before backfilling is continued. <br /> IB. The backfill from ihe bottorn of pipe to the horizontal diametcr shall be <br /> made with bedding material. From the horizontal diameter of the pipe to a <br /> � point one fooT obove the top of pipe, backfill shall be made with approved <br /> I backfill material. <br /> i C. Both Eedding ond backfill material shall be carried up evenly on both sides <br /> I of ihe pipe simultaneously in approximaTely 6-inch layers and ihoroughly <br /> compacted. <br /> I D, 13ackfill maTori�l from one foot abave ihe top of pipe To grade shall be <br /> �:arried up in a�ven layers noT to exceed 12 inches in loose thickness, except <br /> layers in the top 2 feet shall not exceed 6 inches in loose thickness. Each <br /> I layer shall be ihoroughly compacted with mechanical tampers to 95% <br /> compac t i on. <br /> I E. Take special care to compact the backfill under services where they shall <br /> enter buildings and manholes to prevent settling. The Coniractor shall be <br /> fully responsible for any damages to piping or property as a result of settling <br /> oround service lines. Water cannot be used for compaction without written <br /> Iapproval of the Engineer. <br /> 3.03 SHORING AND PUMPING <br /> ( A. All excavations sliall be shored and braced by suitable methods and <br /> maTerials to prevent danger to persons or structures or injuriaus caving and <br /> erosion. Excovations shall be maintained free of water uniil pipe is bedded <br /> �� and anchored.
