, 7. WETLAND FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT
A functional assessment on the created wetland area was conducted using the
Wetland and Buffer Functions Semi-Quantitative Assessment Methodo/ogy designed by
Cooke Scientific Services. Follewing is a summary of the scores which resulted from
this evaluation. The scores indi:ated result from totaling points assigned to wetland
characteristics which relate to the quality of each wetland function. Maximum scores
possible for each function also are shown. Ths functional assessment worksheet is
induded in Appendix E.
This assessment measures the created wetland area, which is part of the larger
Narbeck Swamp system, and reflects the functions that have been established in
place of the pre-construction condition. Some characteristics are fixed such as size
of the area, type of outlet, location in watershed, and adjacent development. Other
characteristics will change with time as explained below. It should also be noted that
this methodology was designed to measure established wetlands. It does not factor
in characteristics oi newly constructed wetlands such as areas of exposed soil, very
young plants, and undeveloped habitat features.
EllOGZIOR Ac_hilt Srore Marimm Poc_cihl .or
Fiood/Stormwater Control p 5
Baseflow/Groundwater Support 12 5
Erosion/Shoreline Protection 7 g
Water Quality Improvement p 2
Natural Biological Support 25 36
Overall Habitat Functions g g
Specific Habitat Functions 9 15
Cultural/Socioeconomic 4 2
Most of these wetland functions are expected to increase over time. For example,
flood/stormwater control, erosion/shoreline protection, and water quality
improvement should increase slightly as the percentage and density of forest cover
increases. Natural bioloical support, oearall habitat functions, and specific habitat
functions should increase significantly as vegetation stnacture develops, and primary
production, organic accumulation, and habitat diversity increase. Cultural/
socioeconomic functions also will increase with the improvement of aesthetics and
recreational opportunities. These values will be reexamined during each comliance
monitoring year.
43
