Currently, my 4 i
has not been approved due to the interpretation of building codes by the
Everett Public Works Department. Therefore, I am requesting special
approval for construction.
The current code, as it has been explained to me, states that new driveways
shall be routed directly to adjoining alleys. However, the location of my
house to be built, is on a corner of an a'_ley and a facing street, I
Washington Avenue.
I believe that it would be more logical and beneficial to route the new
driveway directly and perpendicular to the facing street for the following
reasons:
' C- 1. An alley driveway would decrease safety because with a length of only
6-1/2 feet, it would not allow a clear view of other vehicles when backing
an auto out of the garage.

Z , An alley driveway would be difficult to park cars in the garage,
because it would require a sharp 90 degree turn from the alley into the I
garage with only 6-1/2 feet of driveway. i
i ., 3. An alley dri.veway would expose my autos to the hazard of traffic from ',I
the adjoining bus.inesses which drive through their parking lot. I would
rather avoid such conflicts.
 4. On the other hand, a driveway connecting to the facing street, would I
be more architectarally consistent with other houses on Washington Avenue, '
that alsa have di-ect access to the facing street. My proposed house is a
, very standard split level, and in the or.iginal design has a forward-facina i
. garaqe and driveway. To change the design to a sideways-entrance garage, I
may appear odd in its design, and detract from the neighborhood's
appearance.
 , 5. Finally, a facing-street driveway would be a very desired convenience
for me, in that it would allow a car to be parked completely off public
property, without having to actually be in the garage.
I respectfully request that you consider. the above reasons to grant me
nermission to construct my new house with a normal driveway facing the
front and connecting to Washington Avenue. • /
L i w
' t--
Charles Runyon
