NWTE NorthWest Tower Engineering
WSDOT Monopole, Everett, WA Report No. 140636.05 September 16, 2014
The tower is supported by a concrete pier. Dimensions of the foundation below grade are
unknown. No foundation information was provided. Therefore NWTE could not verify the
adequacy of the monopole base foundation. Considering that the monopole has significant
reserve capacity it is possible that the foundation is also adequate.
Calculations confirmed the adequacy of the anchor rods and base plate. Welds, plates, and
other elements of the connections were assumed to be adequate.
The tower with existing and proposed supported appurtenances was found to fall within the
Twist and Sway limitations for microwave antennas set forth in the TIA-222-G standard for 3dB
degradation in RF signal. Twist and sway values calculated at each dish location for 60-mph
wind are within allowable limits. Operating frequencies between 6-11 GHz were assumed.
Conclusion
The tower meets the requirements of the TIA-222-G standard and WSDOT's additional
requirement to keep all stress levels below 90% for the antenna configurations considered.
NWTE recommends, if foundation drawings can not be obtained, that an investigation be
performed to verify the adequacy of the foundation.
Conditions of Analysis
The analysis performed and the conclusions contained herein are based on the following
assumptions:
• The monopole has been properly installed and maintained.
• Steel grades for structural members are as listed above.
• No x-ray, subsurface excavation, or other similar examination of the tower, foundation
system or welded connections was conducted. For portions of the tower and foundation
system that were not visually accessible, no determination regarding the condition or
adequacy was made.
• All structural components of the monopole including, but not limited to, shaft, connection
components (splices, gusset plates, welds, bolts, anchor rods), and foundations are in
good condition.
• All existing and proposed feed lines are installed on the inside of the monopole.
• Proposed panel antennas will replace existing panel as outlined utilizing the existing pipe
mounts. Proposed RRU units will be installed on new pipe mounts attached to the
platform.
Deviations to these assumptions may affect the analysis results.
NorthWest Tower Engineering www.nwtower.net
2210 1lcwitt Ave,Suite 209,Everett,WA 98201-3767 Tel 425-258-4248 Fax 425-258-4289
