PY/BL/C LYORKri '
I
1
;
RE: Sewer Backflow Protecdon
Deaz
You recently made an inquiry regazding sewer backflow protection. The Everett
Municipal Code requires all basements with drains or sewers where there exists the +
unusual danger of "backup" from the public sewer system to lift their dischazge by }
artificial means or install a backwater valve at the outlet.
a
Bazement areas susceptible to backup are typically those spaces whose floor elevation is
below the elevation of the abutting street or alley and located within the combined sewer
azea az delineated ontie enclosed map.
1'here aze two generally acceptable methods to control backup. Enclosed for your review
is information conceming the backwater valve and grinder pump systems. Both systems
require maintenance by the homeowner with the backwater valve probably requiring more
maintenance than the grinder pump sysrem. Both installations require that a permit be +
obtained from the Public Works Department service counter iceated on the second tloor 1
at 3200 Cedar Street. Installation of a backwater valve requires a$27 plumbing permit.
A grinder pump system requires a $30 sewer alteration permit, a $27 plumbing permit,
and a$35 elecvical permit. '
We hope this correspondence will help clarify and provide guidance conceming this
issue. The licensed plumber of your choice should be able to review your situadon,
answer your site specific questions and install the system of yotr choice with the
appropriate permits.
Sincerely,
Larry Crawford
Eng/Pub Svs Director
c:ia:notnow
CITY OF EVERETT•3200 Cedar Street• Everett.WA 98201 •(425)257-8800• Fax(425) 257-8856
