__ NBBJ
Anilenuie Uesipn Plonninp
April I, 1993
Mr. leffrey S. McFall
Associate Engineer/Building
Everett Public Works
3200 Cedar Street
Everett, WA 98201
Subject: Everett Community Theater
Permit No. B 36220
; Catwalk Railings and Ladder Openings
'' Dearleff:
{
'itiis is in response ro the Inspection Report of 3-18-93 and the Joe Kozlovski memo of Mazch 30,
1993, regarding the opening between rails on the stage side of catwalks and the opening
protection of ladder wells.
We designed the rail opening height at 32 inches clear, about the minimum allowed for the
hanging of stage lighting fixtures. 1'hose on the Bagley Wright Theater are 32 and 42 inches
clear. They do not use safety harnesses, but this can be done on the Everett'Rieater if required.
That is a management responsibility. This comment was also discussed with our'Rieater
Consultants and they concurred that this spacing of rails is standard practice. [t is the only way
the lights can work and the operators can align and set them. 'Ihey also have heard of no safety
problems related to this. The rai!'sng away from the stage is protected by grille cloth on frames.
The ladder wells at the side lighting platforms were designed to our interpreta'tion of WISHA.
See attached copy of the related WISHA section on floor openings. We have guardrails on three
sides of the opening, "so offset that a person cannot walk directly into the opening." We added
the latching chain as an additional deterrent. No work occurs opposite the opening, so passage
by or to the ladder is the only activiry.
As shown on the attached plan, an outswinging gate could be only two feet wide. We felt
restricting the step-0ff width tolfrom the ladder to this width could be a hazard. We also believe
that if more than one chain is provided, only one would be secured. Leaning over in the two foot
passage to secure lower chains would be difficult.
•
Aiirona (alilonia New Yoi1 Noit (aolino OM1io Woshinqton
III Sou'h lahton Sbat SeoMe,WasM1irqion 9810/ f206177?5555 Fm R0616P17300
