B 36220
SUBJECT: ELEVATOR IABBIES
Dear Sue:
Your letter of April 2, 1992 makes a atrong case for allaaing unprotectad
elevator shaft opanings into an exit corridor, howaver I believe that the
elavator ahaft openinga uust be protectad for tha following reaeons:
Section 1706(c) atates " openinga which penetrate y one floor and are
not connected vith openings counicating with other storiea p
basements. . ." I interpret thia to mean an open stair or elavator between
tvo floors onlv i.e. if the opening penetratas the firt floor and continues
into the basement then this exception from the general ahaft raquirementa
would not apply.
Section 3305(j) requiras aeparation if the corridor occupant load exceeda
30, which is also the occupant load which triggers ona hour corridor
construction.
This corridor directly servas tha costune vorkshop, open offica, walting and
future office areas and also sarvea as an exit fxom the second floor lobby
area in addltion to stair no. 1 and atair no. 3. The occupant load of theae
areas exceeda 30.
Section 3305(j) Excaption 1 cannot ba applied to a theater building.
I balieva the varioua codas are created as a guide and as such are to be
used as a minimum standard of safety. Whan trying to determina the
requirements of a difficult situation such as this, I try to put mysalf in
the situation and then datarmine if a hazard to my lifa would exiat.
CITY OF EVERETT•3200 Cedar Street• Everett,WA 98201•(206) 259-8800•Fau (206)259-8882
