Port Gardner Building (Formerly Bon MarchE) <br />Braced Frame FireprooJing <br />As a part of the seismic retrofit program for the Port Gardner Building, we have designed two steel - <br />braced frames for installation in the building. These frames will extend from the basement to the <br />roof. In addition, we have designed braces for the elevator penthouse and drag struts for seismic <br />force redistribution. <br />The structure has remained stable for approximately 65 years: the renovation has not worsened the <br />situation. UBC Section 1702 states that fireproofing is required for members which are essential to <br />the stability of the building as a whole. The basic stability of the Port Gardner Building structure is <br />provided by the existing concrete frames for all gravity loads. These concrete frames also provide a <br />significant amount of resistance to wind and seismic loads. The purpose of the new braced frames <br />and struts is to provide redundant strength and ductility under extreme earthquake loadings.
