The roof structure is a system of "built on site" trusses, spaced on 24 mch
centers. The truss system is constructed of 2x4 members with nailed connections
using plywood gusset plates. I have evaluated the. trusses and found that the individual
members are adequate to support the predictable, roof loads that are expected.
However, the nailed connections are not ade.^,::ate and are in need of additional nails.
The end joints of the juncture of the ceiling joists and the rafters, immediately above the
supporting walls, must have no less than 50 8d nails in each member for a total of 100
nails. 25 nails may be installed from one side and the other 25 from the opposite side.
Some additional gusset plate area may be needed to make a reasonable connection.
Other joints are not as heavily I ided and will require 40 8d nails in each member in the
joints. 20 nails may be installed from each side.
Typically, 3/4 inch plywood gussets are needed to facilitate this type of connection. The
actual outside dimensions of the gussets are left up to the contractor. However, I
recommend a minimum edge distance of 1-1/4 inches and a minimum spaci,g of the
nails of 1 inch centers. My assumptions are that the nails are common 8d sinkers,
measuring 2-1/?_ inches long by 0.131 inches in diameter.
This may seem like a significant amount of nailing. However, when compared to a
premanufactured truss with steel giissets, it is equal in structural integrity.
If I can be of further assistance in this matter, please call.
Sincerely yours,
Jack A. Swar
