'
•• Settlertxnt of backfill wmpacted to 90%is estimated to be approximately one percrnt
oCthe thickness oCtte backfill.
IIn general, the thiclmess of soil layers before compaction should not execed 10 inches for heavy
equipment compactots and 6 inches for hand-operated mechanical compactocs. Backfill
j compa;.tion behind retaining wal(s should be performed usiug hand compactors.
4.3 Wet Weafher Earthwork
' If the prject is constncted during wet season(generally from about October through May)or
Iduring periods of wet weather, additional considerations should be taken into account for
construction. Most of the existing site soils contain sufficient fines to ptoduce a cohesive
mixture when wet. Such soils aze highly susceptible to changes in water content and become
soft and difficult to handle when wet. Proof-rolling and compaction may be impossible when the
moisture content of these soils exceeds the optimum. The following recommendations are
applicable if wet weather is encountered and earthwork must be continued:
► Earthwork should be accomplished in small sections to minimize exposure to we:
; weather. Excavation or the removal of unsuitable soil should be follawed immediately
by the placement and cnmpaction of auitable thickness(generally 8 inches or more)of
clean structural fill. The size of construction equipment may have to be limited to
prevent soil disturbance. In some instances, it may be necessary to excavate soils with a
backhoe,Gradall,or equivalrnt to minimize s4bgrade disturbance.
i

W8628-0I.rydwp/sjm W8628-01 /"
 5 J
