 "
ENGINEfRINPlLISERVIS UEPARTMEM'
, F„
' ,,.
,-
MEMORANDUM
TO: Tom Thetfcrd 1
l /
FROM: Vincent Rhinehart 4
 ;s
DATE: March 18, 1999
SUBJECT: Ur.derground Utllity Locates
I 6ave attached a brochure from Applied Professional Services for your information. I used APS'to locate
underground utilities on my last watermain replacement project and I was very pleesed with the results. The
work was thorough and very accurate. APS locsted all non-city underground utilides and paint marked the
locations. This service is very useful in the design phase, since the utiiity companles do not want to do a dial-dig
locate for design phace.
I incl.ded the APS location work in the surveyor's scope af work. ThLs cay APS was a sub-conkgMor to the
surveyor. This way I did not have to 1assle with trying to contract the work, and having the surveyor contract
this:ervice permltted the surveyor to coordinate hLs schedule wlth APS. That way the utillty paint marks did not
get wa:hed away before the surveyor rnuld survey them.
Herc is how the APS services were charged on my Water MaLt Replacement project:
Olynpic & Crown: 3.685 I.f. ......................10 hours $60/hr = S 600
View Drive: 2,0461.f. ....................... 8 hours S60/hr = S 480
Maplc Street: 2,1781.f. ........................ 6 hoursS60/hr = S 360
TOTAL: 7,9091.f. 24 hours $60/hr = S1,440
I thought this was a very reasonable fec for the one:md a half miles of utility locates.
APS can aLso locate Asbestos Cement (AC) pipe by using ground penetrating radar(GPR). GPR is usunlly used
in coqjunction with potholing tor more accurate results.
APS dces potholing using their air vacuum method and a small 12" dta hole. 7'hey provide t6eir own itagging
and they bacll with whatever you request, from native to CDF or other patching products. Costs[or
pothaling range from about S150 to S200 for a 4 foot to 5 foot depth. The City of Bellewe is haviag APS pothole
traffic signa! pole locations. Their small hole, or tmnch, can locate utillty confllcts wit6out disturbing
surrounding suppoMing soil.
The APS people agreed to come here and give us a talk on their equipment and services, If you are interested, I
kll try to schedule a presentation. Please drop me a note or send me an E-mail if you are interested in having
APS give us a presentation.
 L
