REFORT
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING SERVICES
PROPOSED ART AND SCIENCE BUILDING
EVERETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE
EVERETT, WASHINGTON
FOR
L.rIIN ARCHITECTS
INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of our geotechnical engineering services for the proposed A t and
Science Building at Everett Community College (EvCC) located in Everett, Washington. The location of
the site is shown on the Vicinity Map, Figure 1. The general configuration of the proposed building is
shown on the Site and Exploration Plan, Figure 2.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We understand that EvCC is planning to build a new Art and Science building immediately south of
the existing Shuksan Hall in the southeast area of the campus. The building will be located in the existing
parking lot between the Shuksan Ball and the main campus road. Our understanding of the project is
based on discussions with LMN Architects. We also reviewed the geotechnical end geologic information
from the geolechnical report for Shuksan 1 fall (AGRA, 1997).
The Art and Science Building will be a 3-story rectangular steel -frame building encompassing
approximately 87,300 square feet and the footprint is roughly 260 feet by 160 feet in plan. The building
will include partial below -grade levels that step up from cast to west across the building. The lower floor
level (Level 1 building area) will be constructed at about Elevation 105.0 feet, while the second floor
level (Level 2 building area) will be constructed at about Elevation 119.5 feet. These two building areas
are shown in Figure 2. The existing ground surface near the northeast and southwest sides of the building
is at about Elevation 105 and 121.5 feet, respect.vely. Therefore, the fast floor level will have
below -grade retaining walls up to 14 feet high under the second level, while the southwest comer of
second floor level will have below -grade walls up to about 3 feet high depending on the final site grades.
The purpose of our sen ices is to evaluate soil and groundwater conditions as a basis for developing
design criteria for the geolechnical aspects of the proposed Art and Science Building. Field explorations
and laboratory testing were performed to identify and evaluate subsurface conditions at the site in order to
develop engineering recommendations for use in design of the project.
Our services were perfomied in general accordance with our proposal dated December 1, 2003.
Written authorization to proceed with our initial services was provided by LMN Architecture on
March 5, 2004. The proposed building size and location were changed after our proposal was submitted.
Therefore, an additional boring was added to provide sufficient coverage for the new building footprint.
G c o L' n g i n c c r s I rile No. 5836-002-00/040204
