Incoming material will be mounded up to 16 feet high in the building for processing. We understand <br />that this material weighs abort 30 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). <br />• Constructing a grinder area between the tipping building a id compost system No. 1. We understand <br />that a mobile truck grinder (Diamond Z Manufacturing Model 146313) is planned. The truck grinder <br />is about 46 feet long, 11 feet wide and about 14 feet high. j <br />• Constructing a two-story, pre -fabricated, office building and associated truck scales along the road at <br />J <br />the east entrance of the site. We understand that the building will be founded on cast -in -place <br />concrete foundations. The truck scales are settlement sensitive. <br />• Constructing two stormwater detention ponds or. the west portion of the site. <br />• Providing a future I -acre screenings area between the stormwater detention ponds and the west end of <br />compost system No. 2. <br />• Providing a future 3.5-acre product storage area near the south end of the site and south of compost <br />system No. 3. Compost and sand may be stockpiled in the product storage area. <br />• Constructing other improvements that will include two leachate storage tanks, a wash pad for the <br />loaders, and a future facility maintenance building. j <br />• Constructing access roads with all weather surfacing. All surfaces outside of the compost systems <br />and structures will be paved with asphalt concrete pavement and will be sloped to drain. <br />• Installing utilities including power, telephone, and water services. <br />• Constructing a future wetland on the south side of the side, south of the future product storage area. <br />In conjunction with the facility some general improvements to the acreage will be made for use by the <br />public, which includes an interpretive recreational trail along the length of a 3,200-foot dike located along <br />the north end of the island. The access and parking for this will be built to the east in a future phase of the <br />project. <br />1.3 PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF SERVICES <br />The purpose of our services is to evaluate soil and groundwater conditions as a basis for developing <br />design criteria for geotechnical aspects of the proposed Cedar Grove Composting Smith Island <br />development. Field explorations and laboratory testing were performed to identify and evaluate <br />subsurface conditions across the site in order to develop engineering recommendations for use in design <br />of the project. <br />Our services were performed in general accordance with our proposal dated October 15, 2003. <br />Written authorization to proceed with our initial services was provided by Cedar Grove Composting on <br />October 17, 2003. <br />1.4 OTHER STUDIES <br />In addition to the explorations completed as part of this study, the logs of borings completed as part of <br />previous studies on Smith Island were reviewed.
