ml4.rysi
FIELD EXPLORATIONS
GENERAL .
Subsurface conditions were explored at the site by completing three cone penetration tests (CPTs) and
by excavating 22 test pits, The locations of the explorations were estimated in the field using a hand-held
Global Positioning System (GPS) device and by pacing or tape measuring from existing site features.
The exploration locations were subsequently surveyed by David Evans & Associates and are shown on
the Site Plan, Figure 2.
TEST PIT EXPLORATIONS
The test pit excavations were performed using a track -mounted HD-700 excavator provided and
operated by Emerald Construction Services on November 11 and 12, 2003. Each test pit was excavated
approximately 20 below the existing ground surface. The test pits were observed by a geotechnical
engineer from our firm who identified the exploration locations, classified the soils encountered, obtained
representative soil samples and maintained a detailed log of each test pit. In addition, pertinent
information including soil sample depths, stratigraphy, groundwater seepage and test pit caving were
recorded.
The soils encountered during excavation operations were visually classified in general accordance
with the soil classification system described in Figure A-1. Representative soil samples were obtained
from the test pits, logged, sealed in plastic bags, and transported to our laboratory. The field
classifications were further evaluated in our laboratory. The logs of the test pits are presented in
Figures A-2 to A-23.
The test pit explorations were backfilled with the materials excavated from the test pits. The backfill
was placed in lifts and tamped to the extent practical using the bucket of the excavator. The backfill at
the test pit locations is not engineered fill and may need to be removed and replaced, depending upon the
test pit location and the planned improvements.
CONE PENETRATION TESTS (CPT)
Subsurface soil conditions were also explored by completing three CPT soundings at the site on
November 3, 2003. The CPTs were each advanced 110 feet below the existing ground surface.
Northwest Cone Explorations, Inc. provided cone penetrometer testing services unuer subcontract to
CreoEngineers.
The cone penetrometer test was completed by advancing a small -diameter steel tip with an adjacent
sleeve with hydraulically operated equipment mounted in a truck. Measurements of tip and sleeve
resistance allow interpretation of the soil profile and the density/consistency and shear strength. A
piezometer-equipped cone tip was used allowing pore water pressure measurements. Logs of the cone
penetrometer tests are presented in Figures A-24 through A-26. The logs were developed concurrently
with the tests.
3l0
G e o E n g n e e r s A-1 File No. 10625-001-0211233003
