You asked me to inspect and report on the probable " significance of the settlement marker readings; no set- tlement has been noted at any of the three marker loca- ! tions since they were instalJ.ed and the remaining fill i and surcnarge were added. Neitheac the stripping nor the filling were under my inspection. I understand that the � markers are planted a foot or two into the permanent fill � below the surcharge . � The shallow fill outside the surcnarge consists of wel]. . compacted, £ine-to-medium �and. You reporte3 that the permanent fill was well compacted above the water level and that it is of uniform sanc�y composition tnroughout. The peat and sawmill waste which originall.y extended some 15 or 20 feet deep in the building area are highly , compressible and permeable . The fact that no perceptiUl? settlement has occurred to dat, indicates to me that these materials were totally removed either by 3redging or by gravity displacement.
