Several wood retaining walls me curreutly
located withiu the Native GrowUi Proteclion Eascmcnt(NGPG),along+ith a few keystone
walls less thln four feet high intended for planters. The wood retaining walls include a
Simpson Strap connected to a dead-man anchor bchind the rvall. These straps are located
approximately I G" below tBe grade behind ihe wall. At the top of the slopc, there is a
keystone wall that has expericnccd somc mino:setdemenL
It is my undcrstanding that the City of Everett is requiring the removai ofs many structures
within the NGPGs feasible, understnding that to protect the sivpe, diere may need to he
somc portions remaining. It is my professionl opininn that rcmoval of the dead-man
anchors vill cause more hann thin good, poteutially undennining the keystone wall ahove.
pruperly planted, the areas around Uiese walls will become overgrown with native vegetation.
Provisions should be made for proper maintenancc of this vegetalion to endure long-term
grovth and hencc bank stability. Preference for plants with an interlockin root systcm
should hc considered in the pinnting plan.
1 have .IIBCIIC(I h4'O SICCICIICS IIl illl fll1CII1I IO IIIlISCf.IIC Illy rccommendations. In general, I
rcommend that the wood retainink structure be removcd to just ahove the dead-tnan strps
and the importcd gravcl bchind this section be removed. In doing so,the wcight on th:, slvpe
will bc rcduced and Ihe slope will be returne:? rw;:h closer to its original grade line.
Pollowing the removal of tlicsc woodcn mcmbcr; ,rny ren2iniug imported gravel sliould bc
removed ad repinced vith nativc soil to allo+ plant growth. This soil should be protected
wilh a staked organic jute mesh to prevent eresion and allow for successful plant f;rowth. It
is my understanding that a horticultur, list will spccify the required native plant species.
Wc hope Ihis information is sufficient fur yom'pirposes.
