:
lossee. In a wet location, a 2 inch concrete "rat alab" laid oe the
ground over the moisture barrier would eubatantially reduce moisture from
the eoil.
In locatioas vhere rgdon is preaent in'significant amounts in the soil,a
heated crawl epace may not be advieable. It is poseible that radon gas
from the soil wo+sld be carried into the'living sp+ces becauer. it cannot
,.1, vent to the outside.
4. INSTALLING SIIB-FLOOR SNSULATION
"Insulatiaa can be supported in a number of vaye, including chicken wLre,
"Z-Wire", wood lath, and Tyvek. The support is actually etronger than
x;. neceasary to support dry fiberglass batte. However, if the batta are
•oaked by rain before floora are laid, the value of atrong support will be
evident. The aupport ahould never droop because that will allov air to
s :
flov between the insulation and the fYoor, reducing or eliminating ite
}:: effectiveneas. This hae been a, problem with some plastic aettinge.
J. .
In post-and-beam constructioa, the aupports need to be attached properly
at the foundation vall ao that ineulation csn be extended all the waq to
the rim. A recoended solution is to attach a nailer atrip to the
foundation or inlay it into the concrete forms before pouring) to give
the aupport a eolid place to attach.)
Usually, unfaced batte are used with one of the above supporte.
To increase from R-19 insulation to R-30 requires an additional 3 inches
of depth.
in post-and-beam floor conetruction, one option is to increase the depth
of the beama to 4 x 10. The unit coet for pieces of material will be
more, but the 4 x 10's allow spans and spacing to be increased to reduce
the total amount of material needed. The coats ahould balance out. The 4
x 10 depth allowa the full 9" needed for R-30 fiberglase insulation.
4-52
b....H..w.w..
... . ..,. . . ._.:,,..a,,...._ . _..,
