The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) cross cor+nection regulations require water
purveyors, such as Evere:, :o maintain safe drinking water by taking precautions to ensure that fire
protection water in both commercial and residential sprinkler systems dces not backFlow into the public
system. In the past, single check valves were considered as an adFquate backFlow device for commercial
properties. However, DOH has determined that double chec.k detector assemblies (DCDA) are the
minimum acceptable backFlow protection device for commecial fire protection systems. Some
commerciai buildings in Everett still have single check-valves inslalled, which now must be upgraded to a
DCDA for commercial fire services when new construction is planned that rill affect fire services. This
additional protetion is necessary to adhere to COH regulations and ensure safe drinking water.
Sincerely,

Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connection Specialist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Venturo, Utilities Record Manger
Verl Sly, Meg lialey
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 •(425) 257-8800 • Fax (425) 257-8882
