Utilizing a large dozer (D6), the contractor spread recently placed/stockpiled/aerated
imported soils from the Highway 9 widening site (bluish gray SILT to brownish gray silty SAND with few gravels) into an approximately .5-I'
loose lift and compacted the material via large vibratory roller. The compacted material was observed to be unyielding under the continued
wheel weight of truck/trailer assemblies. Further, the compacted soil was probed, with the full weight of the observer on a .5" diameter steel
T-probe, and proved fimJunyielding with average penetrations of I". A series of in place density tests were conducted to confirm the specified
minimum compaction (95% ASTM 1557). The contractor was notified of all density results listed below. The contractor noted that some areas
of stockpiled fill near the southwest end of the proposed disposal area appeared ss;l upon import. These areas, the contractor noted, would be
spread and further aerated to at/near optimum moisture condition before being compacted.
