INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS
FOR DRINKING WATER
lire analysis performed on this drinking water sample is an examination
for the presence of coiifoum organisms in the water and indicates the
bacteriological quality of the sample. The presence of coliform organisms
la used by health organizations worldwide as an indicator for the possible
presence of other disease causing organisms. Two types 01 tests are used
to determine the presence of conforms in drinking water- MPN (5 tube
method) and MF tests.
SATISFACTORY RESULTS:
Results of 015 tubes positive from an MPN Coliform analysis and less
tttan 2)100 ml from an MF Coliform analysis are SATISFACTORY. Proper
system maintenance and bacteriological monitoring should be continued
routinely to insure the satety of the water supply.
UNSATISFACTORY RESULTS:
A, 115 and 215 tubes positive Irom an MPN Coliform analysis and 2/100 mi
- 41100 ml from an MF Coliform analysis are UNSATISFACTORY
results for a single sample and may be an MCL (Maximum Contami-
nant Level) violation as defined in WAC 248-54-740.
The presence of coliforms indicate the system is not properly pro-
tected against contamination and may bo unsafe for human consump-
tion. Unsatisfactory samples should be investigated IMMEDIATELY
and follow-up samples submitted. Contact your local health depart-
ment or DSHS Regional Office for assistance in determining the
source of contamination and corrective procedures.
D. 315,4/5 and 5/5 tubus positive from an MPN Colilorrn and 41100 mi and
Qraater from an MF Coliform analysis are UNSATISFACTORY results
and DO NOT CONFORM with the Slate Board of Health bacteriological
standards. For further definition of unsatisfactory and non -conforming
samples and MCL violations, see WAC 248.54.740.
In this case, the IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED by a Public System
18:
1. Investigate to determine the cause and correct the situation. Your
local health derailment or DSHS Regional Office can assist you.
2. Submit at teal two (2) Ioliow-up check samples, or more as spoci-
fled in WAC 248.54-710,
3. Publicly notify the users of public water systems as specified in
WAC 248-54.750.
TEST UNSUITABLE:
"Confluent Growth" means bacteria have grown into a continuous mass
which makes counting impossible. "TNTC" mes . tcteria are too
numerous to count. "Excess debris" means that particulates in the wale*
interfere with the interpretation of test results If any box indicating an un-
suitable test is checked, the presence of coliform bacteria could not be
determined and a new sample must be obtained for testing by another
procedure.
SAMPLE
ro edure-
SAMPLE NOT TESTED:
The sample was not icsted tor the reason checked and does nut coup'
toward fulfillment of any bacteriological mcnitoring requirements. To
fulfill the monitoring requirements, another sample must be submitted.
FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Contact your local health department OR the laboratory where this sam-
ple was tested OR the Department of Social and Health Services, Water
Supply and Waste Section, Regional Office, at
Wator Supply and Waste Section
1409 Smith Tower
Seattle, Washington 98104
(2061464.7670
Water Supply and Waste Section
West 924 Sinto
Spokane, Washington 99204
(509) 456-3115
Water Supply and Waste Section
Mall Stop LD -11
Olympia, Washington 98504
(2206) 753-3166
Violet Suppl1er and Waste Suction
2636 West Bruneau
Kf ewwic8k, Washington 99336
