Thanks! -Lori Walker
To: Everett City Council
Re: Riverside Historic Overlay
Dear City Council,
I recently attended a Planning Commission meeting wherein a proposal for a Riverside Historic Overlay
was discussed, including public comments. Many of my neighbors made impassioned pleas for this
proposal to be adopted, and I wish to echo their articulate sentiments:
I purchased my 1918 Mill Workers' Cottage on Victor Place in 1999. I feel proud and lucky that it
became my first(and so far, only) home to own. Over the years I've come to appreciate the rich historic
character of my neighborhood, including its architectural charm and sense of community among its
residents. I am certain that nobody in my neighborhood, and probably not yours, would willingly sign
up to live across the street from an"eye-sore," a structure obviously out of character with the rest of the
homes on the street. While I can promise my neighbors that I would never alter the exterior of my
vintage house to become an "eye-sore," I would like the City of Everett to help me by ensuring that I
don't have to live next door to an "eye-sore," either.
I understand there are two options for the southern boundary of the proposed overlay: one at Everett
Avenue, and one at California. Having viewed the historic structures is this area, it would seem that
these homes, and their neighbors, deserve the same protection as the rest of the proposed Overlay.
Indeed, I would wholeheartedly support additional areas of Riverside to be added to the Overlay in the
future, because I think one beautiful, antique Everett home lost is one too many.
I am concerned that the City of Everett should help to provide adequate protection for the historic
character of the Riverside neighborhood by approving the Overlay Proposal.
Sincerely,
Lori Walker
3014 Victor Place
11/3/2008
