HRH
ax
a F-3 En
H zH
H:7j
H H
NH
OHO
zH
yyH
rH H
o t7 W
z r3 rA
i-3 O M
Mr. John McConaghy
April 28, 1989
Excavations should extend laterally beyond the outside of the footings by a distance equal
to the depth of structural fill to be placed or by a minimum of 5 feet. Structural fill should
be placed in shallow lifts and each lift compacted to at least 95% of maximum dry density,
in accordance with ASTM test designation D-1557 (Modified Proctor)
Pavement areas should be over -excavated to provide a minimum of two feet of structural
fill below the pavement section. An engineering fabric should also be installed below the
structural fill if wet weather conditions exist. Depending on the soil conditions at the time
the work is being completed and the skill exercised by the contractor, some additional
excavation may be required. Some settlement and -pavement cracking should be
anticipated over the life of the pavement if the organic soils are not completely removed
from the pavement areas. Differential settlements may accur between the area over
utility trench backfills and other areas of the pavement. It may be necessary to import pit -
run, clean granular soils to use as backfill for the trenches since some of the the on -site
soils are wet and may be difficult to compact.
Within pavement roadway areas, the trench backfills should be compacted to the relative
compaction recommended earlier.
—.- Additional Services
It is recommended that Terra Associates, Inc. be provided the opportunity for a general
review of the final design and specifications in order to determine the earthwork and
... foundation recommendations have been properly interpreted and implemented in the
design and construction.
The analyses and recommendations submitted if' this report are based upon the data
obtained from our subsurface exploration on the site. The nature and extent of variations
between test locations may not become evident until construction. If variations then
F appear evident, we should be requested to re-evaluate the recommendations presented in
this report prior to proceeding with the construction.
v y It is also recommended that we be retained to provide geotechnical services during
iconstruction. This is to observe compliance with the design concepts, specifications, and
recommendations, and to allow changes in the event subsurface conditions differ from
[ ! those anticipated prior to the start of construction. We recommend that Terra Associates,
Inc. provide consultation and testing during construction to assess conformance with our
recommendations.
+ We request that a minimum of two working days' notice he given to schedule our service
during construction.
We recommend that Terra Associates, Inc. provide the following services during
construction:
(A) Examine all stripped subgrade areas and the proofrolling operations prior
to the start of fill placement or earthwork.
Proiect No. T-innc
