The <br /> subsurface concfitions were explored by excavatiny f<�ur test pits <br /> to a maximum depth of nine and one-half feeC beluw the existiny <br /> surEace at the approxima�e locetions shown on Plate 2. <br /> The locations oY tne test pits were ap��roximately determined <br /> by tape measurements from existiny siCe Eeatures . Elevations of <br /> t�•st pits were approximately determined by interpolation between <br /> plan contours. The locations antl elevations of tne test pits <br /> should be considered accurate only to the deyree implied by the <br /> method used. <br /> The Eield expluraCion was continuously monitored �y a <br /> yeotechnical enyineer trom our. firm who classiEied the soils <br /> encountered, maintained a log oE each test pit, obtained <br /> representative bulk soil samples and observed pertinent site <br /> features. Soils wera classified visually in the field according <br /> to the Unified Soil Classification System which is presented on <br /> Plate 3, Legend. The consistency of the soil was estimated based <br /> on penetrometer tests, the eEfort required to excavate the soil, <br /> the stability of the trench walls and other factors . Logs of the <br /> individual test pits are presented on Plates 4 and 5, Test Pit <br /> Logs. The final logs represent our interpretations of tlie fieZd <br /> legG and th� results of the laboratory examinacion and test of <br /> field samples. The stratification lines on the logs represent the <br /> approximate boundary between soil types. In actuality, the <br /> transition may be gradual. <br /> Shear strengths ef. undisturbed soils were measured where prac- <br /> tical in the field with a penetrometer. Thes? results are <br /> recozded on the test pit logs at the appropriate sample depth. , <br /> Representative soil samples were placed in closed containers <br /> and relurned to our laboratory for further examination and test- <br /> ing. Visual classifications were supplemented by index tests such <br /> as sieve analyses and Atterbery Limits on reoresentative samples. <br /> Moisture determinations were performed' •on all samples. Results of <br /> inoisture determinations, toyether with classifications, are shown <br /> on the test pit logs inciuded in this report. The results of two <br /> sieve analyses are illustrated on PZate 6, Grain Size Analyses. <br /> LT_MITATIONS <br /> Our recorr�mendatiens an�l conclusions are based on the site <br /> materials observed, selective laboratory testing and engineering <br /> analyses.
