Dcscription
The Stormwaler Management Stormt=iiterfl (StormFlller) Is a passive, flow-through, stormwater
lillralion system that Is installed Inline wlth storm drains, The syslem is comprised of one or more
vaults that house rechar{eable, media-1111ed, fllter cartridges. The StormFiller works by passing
stormwalar through the media-filled cartridges, which trap parliclates and adsorb materials such as
dissolved metais and hydrocarhons. Or:ca fittered through ihe media, the treated stormwater is
directed to a callection pipQ or discharged inlo an open channel drainage way.
The StormFilter (s offered In four different configuratlpns: cast-In-piace, precast, linear, and catch
basin. The precasl, linear, and catch basin modeis ulllize pre-manu(aclured uNl lo ease the design
and installatlon processes. The casl-in-lace units are customized for larger flows and may ba either
covered or uncovered underground unils.
Purpose
Tho StormFiller is a passfve, flow-Utrough, stormWate flitratlon system designed to improve ne
quality of stormwate runoff frofii Ihe urban envirvnment betore it enlers receivin wateiways. It Is
Intended to function as a Bect Manayement PrecHce (BMP) to meet fedetal, state, and local
rer, uirements for treatiny runoff in complianr,e wlth the Clean Water Act.
Ttirnugh independont thirci party studles, ;t has been demonslrated that the StormFilter Is highly
effective tor lrealment of fiist flush Oows and for lreatment of Flow-paced flows during the latter pari of
a storm. In general, fhe Stormilter's effir.iency is highest when poliutant conr.entrations are hfghest,
The primary non-point sow•ce pollulants targeted for removal by the StormFilter are: sediments
(TSS), oil and grease, soluble metals, nnfrients, organics, and trash and debris.
Siztng
1-he StormFiller fs sized to lreat the pealc flow of a water qualily design stortn. The peak flow is
deterrnined irom calculations 6ased on the conUibuling watershod hydrology and from a design storm
rnagnitude set by Ihe local slormwaler rnanapernent agenr.y. The particular size of a StormFilter unft
is determied by tlie numUer of filter cariridges (see Figure 1) equired to treat ttis pealc (low.
The ilow rate lhrough each flller cartridpe is adjuslahle, allowing control over the amount of contact
qme between the influent and the filter media. The maximum flow rate through each cartridge can be
adjuslod to between 5 and 15 gpm using a calibraled restrictor dfsa at the base of each filter
cartr!dge. AdJusiments to the car(ritice ilow rde will affect lhe number of cartridges requlfed to ifeat
the peal< flow.
Basic Function
The StormFilter Is desfned to siphon stomwater runo(f throuch a filler cartridge c:ontaining media. A
variety of filtcr medla Is availa6le and can he customized for each site to target and rernave ihe
desired leuels of sedirnents, dissolved phasphorus, dissolved metals, organics, and oil and greasc.
In many cases, a combination uf inedia is recximmended to maximize lho e(Tecliveness of the
stormwater poilutant removat.
1' I100.54.4667 F uoo,581.1271 w www.stormwaterinc,com
