The entire application was submitted electronically. Due to the timing of
the grant announcement and due date for submittal, the Police Department was not able to obtain formal
Council approval prior to submittal of application.
The Police Department was notified on July 28, 2009, ("award date") that the City has been awarded the
grant, which will fund $608,322.00 for entry-level salary and benefits for two full-time officers for three
years (July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2012). The Police Department would use these grant funds for
placement of a School Resource Officer at Explorer Middle School and for one gang awareness and
education officer. The terms of the grant require the City to keep the two positions for at least twelve months
after the grant period expires.
The COPS Hiring Recovery Program is a Recovery Act grant program and this grant would be subject to
Recovery Act recordkeeping and reporting requirements. The City has 90 days from the award date to accept
the grant.
RECOMMENDATION:
Authorize the Mayor to sign the necessary documents to accept the 2009 COPS Hiring Recovery Program
Grant award in the amount of$608,322.
115
