The Washington State DepaAment of Health (DOH) cross connection regulations require va[er
purveyors, such as Everett, to maintain safe drinking water by taking precautions to ensure that fire
protection water in both commercial and residential sprinkler systems dces not backflow into the public
system. In the past, single chck valves were considered as an adequate hackflow device for commercial
properties. However, DOH has determined that double chec4: detedor assemblies (DCDA) are the
minimum acceptable backflow protection device for commercial fire protection systems. Some
commercial buildings in Everett still have single check-valves installed, w'iich now must be upgraded to a
DCDA for commercial fire services when new construc[ion is planned tYat will aHed flre services. This
additional protedion is necessary to adhere to DOH regulations and ensure safe drinking water.
Smcerely,

hhR s-
,---
Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connection Spedalist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assistant F,re Plarshal Jim Venture, Utilities Records Manager
Verl Sly, Meg Haley
CI 1 Y Of f VE RF T T • 3200 Cedar Street • EvereU.
