S' .
Yae Four
The peaty muck deposit is expected to extenQ. under the proposed
building ite as extrapolated on the attached f;eneralized croes
aections, and probably underlies eoils below the 581 foot con-
tour to a point estimated to be 35 feet north of thP proposed
southeast building corner.
Overlying the peaty muck depoeit in places, uncontrolled fill
was observed and logged. Foth these materiala r,ould be subfect-
ed to eignificant differential and total aettlemente vrhich
could be detrimental to performance of the atructure.
Thus it is recom ended to over excavate the propoeed building
aree ard access drivevays to remove the peai;, Backfill to
above wF.ter table should be clean gravel or quarry spalle of
eix inct minus rock having little or no fine fraction. Thia
materia] requires no compactive effort. The excavation should
be a mitimum of four feet wider on all sidee than the anticipa-
ted foo•ting locationn.
The backfill materiel, as described above, sh.ould be placed ae
soon ae pocsible after ecavation to pz•eclude th buildup of
excess vrater end water loosened materials. Die to the presence
of thie water, conventional compaction of a i'ine grained mater-
ial inetead of the recommended backfill vroul2 be impoesible.
Upon completion of the bacicfill, a normal spread footing design
may be used with an allowable soil bearing cepacity of 1,500
P.S,F.
Alternative methode include the use of pil foundations or
surchargin with fill exceedin the weifht of the building
through a dry aeason prior to construction o.f shallow spread
footin;s, If the surcharge method ie to be used, the fill should
be placed beginning at the edea of the peaty muck depoeit, and
spread tovaard the southeast to rol.l the mobile fractions away
from the propoaed building site, Upon conpletion of the surcha-
rge, a shallow spread footing design may be used with en allov-
able soil bearine canacity of 1,000 P.S.F.
Additional Con.ments
The sandy loam and loamy sand eoils encounterec below ttie top-
coils and above the weathered till layer he.ve ood compactive
qualities, and may be uti].ized as strveturFl fill when corapact-
ed at the proper moiRture content.
If the recoremended over excavation method is to be used, a aed-
' imentation control far.ility will have to be engineered,
The conclusione and recommendations presnted herein are pro-
fessional epinions. These op9nions are based on generally acc-
epted soil.a enineering principlea and prnctice, and no varrant
is e>presced or frrplied.
EA.9T!/ AMILYS/S
