°Y/BL/C NO//C5
April 21, 2004
Rcsident
827 103rd PI Sli
liverett WA 9R20R
Subj.: Duck Feeding at 103rd 1'I S.G. Stormwater Pond
Denr Resident:
A week or so ago, the City of Gverett mailed you a letter ragarding removel of ducks from our 103`" PI
S.G. Stormwater Pond. Afler receiving a comment from one resident on 103` PI S.G., we have re-
evaluated nur stretegy for removing ducks from the 103'd PI S.I:. Stortnwacer Pond. Rether than
removing the ducks immedietely, we will wait et least unril July 15, 2004 to remove the nest boxes that
were placed within the stormwater pond. This should provide sufficient time tor hatching of
incubating eggs and for the dacklings to leam to Ily.
}{owever, it is extremely important for all duck feeding to stop immedielely. Feeding ducks is bad for
twth water qnality and ducks. Human food is not good for ducks. Humen food is, in effect, junk food
for ducks; it lacks nutritionul value that is essential for healthy ducks. Ducks fed human food also can
sut'fer more from disease than ducks thnt rely upon nawral food sources. lf the human feeding ol the
ducks stops, many of the ducks should disperse ro other availahle hnbitet on their own and the City of
Gverett may not need to physically relocate eny ducks.
Duck droppings can also pollute surface waters. In fact, the color of the wnter in the 13`d PI S.I.
stomiwnter pond sug@ests thnt thc ducks are alrcady contributing to bacterial pollution of North Creek,
the small stream jusi a few hundred feet eway from 103rd PI SI: that the stormwater pond drains to.
Purthermore. samples collecled by the City of Gverett indicate thnt the water quality in North Creek
docs not comply with Wushington Stnte water quality standards for bacteria.
"I he Washington State I)epartmcnt of I:cology is so concemed about bacterial levels in North Creek
that they have dimcted the City of liverett, and all other local governments in the North Crcek
vutershed, to reduce bacterial contamination of Nonh Creek. Removal of the nest boxes end
climination of human feeding of the ducks at the 103rd PI S.G. stormwater pond are consistent with the
stcps the Departmcnt of l:cology wnnls the Ciq of C:verctt to take to improve water quality in North
Creck.
I n summaric, if you nre fceding the ducks, please stop doing so immedietely. The City of I:veretl will
remove thc nest boxrs, feedcrs and all other artificial strucwres installed in or next to the stormwater
pond on nppraximntely luly I 5, 2004. I f all human feeding of the dur.ks stops and the number of ducks
wilhin thc pand reduces to a naturnl level, the Ciry of I:verett will not remove the remaining ducks.
io,,. i sb r,m
CITV OF EVEREIT • 3200 Ceder Street • Everetl.
