Foundation preparation had not begun for the southeast region of the site at
this time. We observed that the excavation was approximately 8 to 18 inches in depth.
We probed the subgrade with a half inch diameter steel probe rod and the probe rod penetrated from 2
inches to 3 feet in depth and location of excessive probe depth appeared to random. We evaluated the
subgrade soils as previously placed fill. We have not been provided with documentation on how the fill
was placed or if density testing had occurred.
It is our opinion that the old fill should be removed prior to placement of footings, It is not known at
this time how deep the fill extends. Further explorations should be performed to evaluate the depth of
old fill. These explorations could occur at the time of subgrade overexcavation. We expect, due to site
topography, that fill could be on the order of I to 4 feet for the addition located on the western side of
the existing structure.
Planned slab subgrade for the addition on the western side of the existing structure consists of
undocumented fill as well. There is some risk of settlement underlying this slab with undocumented fill
conditions and probe depths discussed above. The owner of the property should evaluate if this risk is
acceptable.
Attachment: Signed:
Distribution:
OI/Z
