City of Everett Building Department 3200 Cedar Street Everett, WA 98201 ATTENTION: Mr. Jack Wedeberg PROJECT: J.A.0 (Gidden's industries) Building "B" ACCO Project J911070 SUBJECT: Chapter 19 of the Uniform Mechanical Code Regarding Direct Fired Make-up Air Units Gentlemen: Thank you for bringing to our attention Section 1904 of the U.M.C., and its provisions regarding direct fired gas make-up air units. ACCO endeavors to keep up on the latest codes, and we apologize for this item slipping through the cracks. Your question caught us by surprise because we have installed a number of this type of unit with return air recirculation, and have never had Section 1904 surface. Our local supplier has sold many more units of this type to other contractors, and he has never had the questions come up either. None -the -less, we referred your concerns to the manufacturer, Sterling/Applied Air. Their response was the same as the local supplier. They have not had a building official question the applicability of their units with respect to Section 1904. the reason being that their units are built to ANSI Standard Z83.4, which allows return air to be added to the outside air stream after the outside air has passed the zone of combustion (refer to enclosure).
