SUMMARY STATEMENT: <br /> In 1987, widening 37th Street (Rucker-Broadway) from two lanes to four <br /> lanes was proposed to assist navy traffic from the watefront to I-5. <br /> The project would require the parking to be removed, and the steet to be <br /> widened. Funds were appropriated by the Washington State Legislature to <br /> assist the City in the construction of the improvement at an estimated <br /> cost of $1.8 million. City Council passed resolution #2825 committing <br /> City funds for the project. <br /> A more refined estimate has been completed on the project and the <br /> current estimated cost is $2 .8+ million. This increase in cost, coupled <br /> with neighborhood opposition has prompted the City to propose an <br /> alternative project. <br /> Improvements to the 41st corridor (Rucker to Broadway) will provide <br /> additional capacity needed for Homeport traffic. The project would <br /> provide a second southbound turn pocket on Rucker at 41st Street for <br /> Homeport traffic going to I-5. An additional eastbound lane to I-5 <br /> would be added east of Colby past GTE. Safety improvements would be <br /> constructed at the 41st Street off ramp at Broadway and a new <br /> acceleration lane added for traffic merging with the southbound I-5 on <br /> ramp.
