SUMMARY STATEMENT:
In 1987, widening 37th Street (Rucker-Broadway) from two lanes to four
lanes was proposed to assist navy traffic from the watefront to I-5.
The project would require the parking to be removed, and the steet to be
widened. Funds were appropriated by the Washington State Legislature to
assist the City in the construction of the improvement at an estimated
cost of $1.8 million. City Council passed resolution #2825 committing
City funds for the project.
A more refined estimate has been completed on the project and the
current estimated cost is $2 .8+ million. This increase in cost, coupled
with neighborhood opposition has prompted the City to propose an
alternative project.
Improvements to the 41st corridor (Rucker to Broadway) will provide
additional capacity needed for Homeport traffic. The project would
provide a second southbound turn pocket on Rucker at 41st Street for
Homeport traffic going to I-5. An additional eastbound lane to I-5
would be added east of Colby past GTE. Safety improvements would be
constructed at the 41st Street off ramp at Broadway and a new
acceleration lane added for traffic merging with the southbound I-5 on
ramp. Additionally, improvements would be made to 41st at Rucker to
provide better signal efficiency to allow additional timing needed for
the Naval traffic.
The estimated cost for the total improvement is $1. 15 million.
TAC has reviewed and approved the project.
SOURCE OF FUNDS
STATE CITY TOTAL
41st Street & Broadway $250,000 $-0- $ 250, 000
(Including Ramp Extension)
41st Street & Rucker $450, 000 $450, 000 $ 900, 000
TOTAL $700, 000 $450, 000 $1, 1050, 000
RECOMMENDATION (Exact action requested of Council)
Approve Resolution
Page two of two
agenda 11
