She was part of a mission trip to Mexico with her youth group, and she has
also been involved closer to home with projects serving the homeless in
Everett and Seattle. She has volunteered many hours as a math tutor at
Voyager Middle School and Mariner High School, and has donated her own
money to World Concern for causes such as the Sept. 11 and the Haiti
earthquake.
In 2003, when Kayla was in the 4th grade, her family was torn apart by a
crime committed by a family member. Through her faith, Kayla was able
to overcome the trauma of the situation and has excelled both emotionally
and academically.
She said her greatest obstacle has been growing up without a father. Her
biological father left when she was 10 years old. In her own words, she
said she, "overcame this obstacle by relying on my mom and learning to be
self sufficient. I now have a step father I am proud to call my dad."
Her mom provides her with inspiration and has remained strong through it
all. Kayla looks to her mom for strength and advice and knows that with
her mom's support, she can achieve anything.
Kayla says her greatest achievement is being accepted at Western
Washington University. She hopes to someday become a teacher or social
worker. She describes herself as giving, dedicated and loyal.
Maddy Huggins
Maddy Huggins is an 18-year-old senior at Archbishop Murphy High
School. Maddy volunteers at her school and in her community. She was
involved with the planning of the school homecoming, prom and holiday
food drive. She also organized a senior citizen prom at an assisted living
home. She is a strong communicator, an effective leader in school and is a
role model for fellow students.
