We discovered two days ago that it is currently not allowed. For
the past year we have researched various options for our changing family needs. Recently we decided
that a mother-in-law cottage would be the perfect answer. We have a reputable builder lined up with
plans that will fit our lot perfectly, however the planning department explained that unless this new
ordinance is approved we will not be able to build it. They were very helpful and suggested we see the
video in which Alan Giffen presented the proposal at the council meeting on October 14th.
We strongly encourage you pass this ordinance. All of the property value safe guards make perfect
sense to us. Of course:we want to maintain the integrity of our neighborhood and our home. What we
have in mind would meet all of"the restrictions and conditions. We are confident that it would meet
with the approval of our neighbors. Most importantly we want to meet the needs of our changing
extended family as Scott and I move towards full time retirement. My mother is in her late 70's and still
doing quite well, yet she is alone. We would like her closer. If orwhen the time comes, our oldest
daughter has expressed an interest in moving with her family into the main home and doing the same
for us.
We are not looking to build a rental. We want to have an independent cottage dwelling close enough to
be company and comfort while maintaining independence. Our children were raised in this
neighborhood. My grandchildren are in the Everett School District going to the same Elementary that
their mother attended. My husband graduated from Everett High, the same school our daughters
graduated from. We are ingrained in this community and city. We are also a member of a large and
growing demographic of people having to make these choices in a difficult economy.
This ordinance change is needed urgently and soon. Not just to satisfy economic growth, but to
maintain happy healthy lifestyles of the residence who love it here. Slowing the economic slump or
keeping pride in homes and neighborhoods would be a bonus. Please call us if we can testify or assist in
any way towards moving this change forward. We live at 4311 Olympic blvd by Howarth Park.
Thank you for your time,.
