Meg Haley J 62 Ve/'CtePyl wg!
From: Meg Haley
Sent: Monday, August 24, 2015 11:56 AM
To: 'mukilteomom4@gmail.com'
Cc: Paul McKee
Subject: Concern about customer access to toilet rooms in retail uses
RE: W1508-011
Good morning Jeane,
I left a voicemail last week and today in response to your complaint. The building code applies to new permit
applications for the design of tenant improvements and for the design of new buildings. For existing buildings with
tenant improvements, compliance with this particular code section may not be triggered, depending on the scope of
improvements in the permit application.
• Washington State has amended the 2012 International Building Code (IBC) to include public (customer
access) to toilet rooms when the building is occupied, per IBC section 2902.3.1. This section was not
adopted by the state in the 2009 IBC.
• This is not a retroactive code which requires customer access to toilet rooms in buildings used by the
public, such as retail shops.
The thrift shop was applied for a building permit in 2002, when access to toilet rooms for customers was not a building
code requirement. I will be closing your complaint record.
Please call me if you would like to discuss further.
Meg
MEG HALEY, RAI City of Everett Permit Services
3200 Cedar St, Everett WA 98201 1425.257.8813
mhalev@everettwa.gov I www.everettwa.gov/Permits
1
