The sprinkler system ma be supplied <br /> from the domestic water supply if of adequate volume and pressure. <br /> B 3. Vertical openings need not be protected if the building is protected by an ap- <br /> proved automatic sprinkler system. <br /> • 4. BASEMENT ACCESS OR SPRINKLER PROTECTION <br /> B An approved automatic sprinkler system shall be provided in basements or sto- <br /> I ries exceeding 1,500 square feet in area and not having a minimum of 20 square <br /> B feet of opening entirely above the adjoining ground level in each 50 lineal feet or <br /> fraction thereof of exterior wall on at least one side of the building.Openings shall <br /> B have a minimum clear dimension of 30 inches. <br /> If any portion of a basement is located more than 75 feet from required open- <br /> B ings,the basement shall be provided with an approved automatic sprinkler system <br /> I throughout. <br /> B <br /> I 5. STANDPIPES <br /> B Any buildings over four stories in height shall be provided with an approved <br /> I Class I or III standpipe system. <br /> B <br /> I 6. SMOKE DETECTORS - _ <br /> B (a) General. Dwelling units and hotel or lodging house guest rooms that are <br /> I used for sleeping purposes shall be provided with smoke detectors.Detectors shall <br /> B be installed in accordance with the approved manufacturer's instructions. <br /> (b) Power Source. Smoke detectors may be battery operated or may receive <br /> B their primary power from the building wiring when such wiring is served from a <br /> 13 commercial source.Wiring shall be permanent and without a disconnecting switch <br /> other than those required for over-current protection. <br /> • (c) Locations within Dwelling Units. In dwelling units, detectors shall be <br /> mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in the corridor or area <br /> B giving access to each separate sleeping area. Where sleeping rooms are on an up- <br /> I per level,the detector shall be placed at the center of the ceiling directly above the <br /> B stairway. Detectors shall also be installed in the basement of dwelling units having <br /> I a stairway which opens from the basement into the dwelling. Detectors shall <br /> B sound an alarm audible in all sleeping areas of the dwelling unit in which they are <br /> I located. <br /> B (d)Location in Efficiency Dwelling Units and Hotels. In efficiency dwelling <br /> I units, hotel suites and in hotel sleeping rooms, detectors shall be located on the <br /> B <br /> ceiling or wall of the main room or hotel sleeping room. When sleeping rooms <br /> within an efficiency dwelling unit or hotel suite are on an upper level,the detector <br /> I shall be placed at the center of the ceiling directly above the stairway. When actu- <br /> B ated, the detector shall sound an alarm audible within the sleeping area of the <br /> I dwelling unit, hotel suite or sleeping room in which it is located. <br /> B 7. SEPARATION OF OCCUPANCIES <br /> BOccupancy separations shall be provided as specified in the Building Code.See <br /> U.B.C.Section 503.When approved by the chief,existing wood lath and plaster in <br /> B good condition or 1/2-inch gypsum wallboard may be acceptable where one-hour <br /> I occupancy separations are required. <br /> 454 <br />
