1 . Limit the size of buildings. The larger the
area of a building the greater the difficulty
of fighting a fire and the greater the
likelihood of a serious fire involving other
nearby buildings.
2. Provide exterior walls and parapets that will
restrict the spread of fire.
3 . Protect windows and other openings in
exterior walls when buildings are or may be
closely build to property lines.
4. Use a roof covering that is effective against
fire exposures and possesses no flying brand
hazard.
The next principle is to construct a building so that
it will limit the extent of a fire. For this codes
include provisions which:
1. Limit the size of the fire areas in the
building. Such is accomplished by the
construction of adequate fire walls. When a
wall is called upon to stop a spreading fire
it must have not only the ability to restrict
the transmission of heat but it must have
stability against collapse or overturning far
in excess of that presented by other walls.
2. Limit the spread of fire upward in the
building. This is accomplished by enclosing
vertical openings and communications, shafts
used for elevators, dumbwaiters, pipes and
other utilities, air ducts and also the
stairways previously discussed, with walls
having a specified fire resistance rating.
The enclosure of shafts is not complete
unless all openings are adequately protected
with fire doors.
3 . Provide vertical separation between openings
in exterior walls. This help to restrict the
spread of fire from the windows on one story
through the windows of the story above.
4 . Provide a approved automatic sprinkler system
to control a fire for occupancies where there
is manufacture, storage or sale of
combustible goods, merchandise or materials.
The next principle is to construct buildings so that
the fire department will be able to save lives and
property by containing the fire within the building of
origin or, in buildings that are tall, to the floor of
origin. All of the previously mentioned factors are
important, and additional provisions include:
1. Fire resistive type of construction for tall
buildings so the fire fighters can operate
