Morrie Trautman: Yes. City.Hall is not so generic to me. How many do we have?
Barb Hardman: Why would we want to name a historic building after a person who is not historic or
do not necessarily have a history with that building. If we are going to rename a historic building,I
would like to see it named after a person related in some historic way,i.e.the architect, etc. That would
teach something about the history of the building.
Morrie Trautman: I think the naming of the Senior Center is a great example of honoring someone
who made a great contribution to the community. Carl Gipson Sr.was well known and his contributions
were well known. The building didn't have any particular significance, it was more naming of the
facility to honor Mr. Gipson, and I think it was very appropriate.
Old City Hall is a historic building and it is a city hall. That's what its name should be.
Jim Staniford: You are thinking it's more appropriate to name something like the Ed Hansen
Conference Center.
Morrie Trautman: Exactly,he had a great impact on the city and on that particular project. It was
very appropriate to name the conference center after him. Had that been some historical building,I
would not have picked that name.
Jim Staniford: I think City Hall should be called the Police Station, because that's what it is now.
Morrie Trautman: In criteria J,the policy says commonly held names should not be changes. This has
always been known as City Hall. Why should we have the authority to change 75 years of history with
that name?
Dave Ramstad: And South Jr.will always be known as South Jr.
Jim Staniford: If City Hall were renamed for Mayor Moore,it might mean something to new people
moving into town, but it is only the people who have been here for a while who would know that is the
old City Hall building. Anybody has been here in the last 10 years doesn't know that was the old City
Hall building.
Dave Koenig: There is a definition of"City Hall" in the City charter; it is where the City Council
meets.
Morrie Trautman: That's old City Hall then.
Dave Koenig: If Council started meeting somewhere else, that would become City Hall.
Gary Meisner: Who brought forward the idea of naming City Hall after Mayor Bill Moore?
Dave Koenig: A group of citizens got together and proposed it.
Morrie Trautman: Don't we have lots of things we could name after him? I'm not disparaging Bill
Moore at all.
Jim Staniford: The resolution before us tonight is just giving Council the rules and guidelines for
naming a building or place.
9
17
